Rum at Highlanders

Our selection of rums includes examples of each of the three main styles of rum, but like everything in the world of spirits today – it gets much more complicated the more you get into it, but to keep things easy rather than comprehensive, we shall leave things split into these three groups.

English Style Rum – this is an industrial style of rum, primarily made from molasses  – these rums come from the likes of Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Virgin Islands, Antigua, St. Lucia, British Guyana & Mauritius. They tend to be dark, spiced and aromatic, often aged for several years in casks.

French Style Rum (or Rhum) – you will see on these bottles the words Agricole Rhum, the rum is made from pure sugar cane juice and comes from the old french colonies such as Marinique, Guadeloupe, Haiti, French Guyana & Maritius. These rums are usually distilled using column stills and tend to be fruity with a drier taste. Often, they are aged using Cognac and Armagnac barrels.

Spanish Style Rum – similar to the english style, spanish rums are also produced from molasses, many employ the Solera method of production, they are usually lighter in taste than the english rums. These rums come from places such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Guatemala, Nicarague, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica and Ecuador.

Rules, what rules ?

Not everything from a country may fit into the style that you expect, but then again, that is often the enjoyment of trying something different – some rums from the spanish producing areas use Sugarcane honey and not molasses, some rums from the usual french style areas use a blend of sugarcane and molasses – and some rums are aged in whisky barrels, port barrels as well as bourbon barrels. All of these factors go into the final flavor and enjoyment that you get from your rum.
